In honor of Sunglasses Day, Fun City is offering a free $5 arcade card (with any purchase) when you wear your sunglasses into Fun City and mention the promotion.

Nick's Garden Center Contest - Demi's Animal Rescue

Nick's Garden Center out of Aurora, Colorado, is sponsoring a Non-Profit Photo Vote Contest through their Facebook page. The public was initially in charge of the contest, nominating local nonprofits in need of some extra help, with Nick's Garden Center narrowing down the nominees to five finalists of their own choosing. The five finalists, including Demi's Animal Rescue, are Empowering Hungry Families to Garden, Adaptive Gardening, Circle of Latina Leadership and Capitol Fellows Reception and Relay for Life of Aurora - American Cancer Society.

It is now up to the public once again to select the winning nonprofit by going to the Nick's Garden Center Facebook page and voting for their favorite nonprofit. The winning nonprofit will receive a $2,500 grant. Voting takes place through July 9, and everyone can vote once per day.

Demi's Animal Rescue is a no kill rescue run by 17-year-old Demi Merritt, who started the 501 nonprofit when she was only 14. The rescue concentrates on four main points: fostering, adopting, donating and spreading the word. Demi's Animal Rescue is in need of public support through donations and awareness, as it is currently a small rescue that would benefit from expansion. The more donations and help through contests like Nick's means the rescue can grow and take in more animals in need!

Demi Merritt was recently featured on Denver's ABC affiliate, 7News, as part of their 7 Everyday Hero segment. The photo below includes Demi and some of the Channel 7 Everyday Hero news team.

Ice Cream Soda Day in Denver

Every June 20 is National Ice Cream Soda Day, so why not relax with an old fashioned ice cream soda today? Ice cream sodas were originally invented in 1874 by Robert Green during Philadelphia's sesquicentennial celebration. According to legend, Green added the ice cream once he ran out of ice. To this day, Robert Green's tombstone is transcribed with the phrase "Originator of the Ice Cream Soda."

If you live in the Denver area and want to celebrate National Ice Cream Soda Day, there are many options available. First of all, you can celebrate at home by exploring one of several different ice cream soda recipes. Second, you can head out to a local soda fountain (there are not many of these left) or ice cream parlor. For example:

1) The Lyons Soda Fountain is one of the oldest soda fountains in Colorado, and dishes out authentic ice cream sodas.
2) The Highland Park Old Fashioned Soda Fountain has been open for more than 100 years, and offers standard soda fountain fare as well as diner style food!

Channel 7 Everyday Hero - Demi Merritt

Each week, Denver's ABC affiliate 7NEWS presents the "7 Everyday Hero" award. The award is given out once a week, presented during the Sunday newscast at 10pm. The program airs again throughout the week on Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at select times.

The way the program works is that viewers nominate someone who stands out in the community; a person whom they believe should be honored for their contributions. 7NEWS has a selection committee in place that meets each week, reviewing all the nominees. It typically takes three to four weeks from the time a person is nominated for the selection committee to make a decision about whether that individual will receive the award. Recipients are selected based off numerous factors, including their ability to motivate others, make sacrifices, set an example, remain focused, solve problems, follow through with goals and to make a difference.

On Sunday, June 23, 2013, Demi Merritt will be presented with the "7 Everyday Hero" award by anchor Mitch Jelniker. Merritt is the founder of Demi's Animal Rescue, a registered 501c(3) non profit organization that rescues and adopts out animals. In addition to running the organization, Demi also volunteers and helps raise money for Reinrescue, Maxfund Animal Adoption Center and Edwards Foundation for Rescued Animals.

What makes this award even more special? Demi Merritt is only 17! Her future goals include growing Demi's Animal Rescue into one of the largest rescues in Colorado, one that supports all types of animals from all over the world.

Demi's "7 Everyday Hero" segment will air at 10pm on Sunday, June 23. The segment airs again on Monday, June 24, at 5am, Thursday, June 27, at 11am, Saturday, June 29, at 5pm and Sunday, June 30, at 7am.

Go Fishing Day, International Sushi Day and International Panic Day

Did you know that June 18 marks three different "holidays?" That's right, June 18th is Go Fishing Day, Sushi Day and International Panic Day. Why not celebrate these unique holidays with your own brand of fun?

1) Go Fishing Day is self explanatory. It is a day to get out and fish. Did you know that more people in the United States fish than play golf and tennis? If you are unable to go out and fish today, there are other ways to celebrate, including making baked goods around a fish theme. Engaging in arts and crafts centered around fish is another way to celebrate the holiday.

2) International Sushi Day - The best way to celebrate this holiday is to go out to your favorite sushi restaurant or make the tasty food at home. Either way, grab yourself some yellowtail, shrimp, eel, octopus, smelt egg, or sea urchin. Top that off with California rolls or Philadelphia rolls.

3) International Panic Day - This is a holiday where people have the permission to "panic" about anything in their lives that stresses them out. Although this holiday is meant to be "tongue-in-cheek," more than 6 million people suffer from panic disorder.

National Flag Day in Denver

National Flag Day takes place every June 14, with celebrations around the United States that include ceremonies, parades, picnics and essay contests. These celebrations are typically sponsored by schools, veterans' groups and the National Flag Day Foundation, whose focus is to preserve the history, pride and tradition of the flag.

Although National Flag Day did not become an official national holiday until August 3, 1949, it has been celebrated for much longer. The first celebration took place in 1877, as it marked 100 years since the Flag Resolution of 1777. However, many people credit Wisconsin school teacher BJ Cigrand as spearheading the first annual Flag Day celebration in 1885. Cigrand had his students observe the flag on June 14, and today he is referred to as the "Father of Flag Day."

There are many ways people celebrate National Flag Day. In the Denver area, each year Flag Day is celebrated at Genesee Mountain. At 11:30am on June 14, 2013, the 102nd annual celebration will take place, featuring a Flag Day ceremony and a picnic to follow.

In addition to celebrations, many places and businesses offer freebies on Flag Day. For example, there is a free USFlag app available for iPhone users. Free downloads of The National Anthem are available on Amazon, and free Flag Day eCards are available through the Freebie Depot.

Father's Day Discount in Denver

Are you looking for somewhere in Denver to spend Father's Day this year, a place the entire family can enjoy? Why not head over to Fun City in Littleton? This Sunday, June 16, 2013, all dads bowl free at Fun City.

Have you ever wondered how Father's Day began? The first event in the U.S. to honor fathers took place on July 5, 1908, at a church in West Virginia. The celebration was to honor the memory of 362 men who died at the Fairmont Coal Company mines the previous year. The following year, Sonora Smart Dodd, a woman in Spokane,Washington, attempted to create a holiday for men very similar to that of Mother's Day. Her success at petitioning for the holiday resulted in the first statewide celebration of Father's Day on July 19, 1910, in Washington.

Although Father's Day gained in popularity over the years, it did not become a federal holiday until 1972, the year President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation to make it a holiday.

National Iced Tea Day in Denver

National Iced Tea Day is celebrated every June 10, a perfect way to kick off the summer season each year. Consumers can celebrate by making and enjoying their own iced tea at home, or by going out and ordering iced tea at restaurants and bakeries. Some places even offer their customers free or discounted tea in honor of the holiday!

Iced tea can trace its origins to the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, where ice was added to hot tea in order to cool off fairgoers. Since then, it has continued to grow in popularity. Tea has also been known to offer many health benefits, including improved dental health due to the natural fluoride found in tea. Some research suggests tea provides benefits for the health of the heart, brain, bones and for certain patients with cancer.

If you live in the Denver area, there are a few places offering freebies for National Tea Day.

1) Teavana has a printable coupon on their official website, good for a free Teavana Tea. The coupon is valid June 10th only, and is good for a free 16-ounce cup. This offer is good at all three Denver area locations, including Cherry Creek, Park Meadows and Flatirons.

National Doughnut Day in Denver

Fun City is all about having a good time, and who doesn't have a good time when they are munching on doughnuts?

Unlike many food holidays, National Doughnut Day has an origin and history that can be traced. Celebrated on the first Friday of June each year, National Doughnut Day takes place in 2013 on Friday, June 7.

The holiday originated in Chicago in 1938, spearheaded by The Salvation Army to help raise money for those struggling during The Great Depression. The holiday also celebrated the "doughnut lassies," women who distributed doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. This was why soldiers arriving home were nicknamed "doughboys!"

Today, National Doughnut Day is a time to celebrate the sugary treat and take advantage of discounts, freebies, and deals offered by doughnut shops across the country. If you live in the Denver area, there are several places offering discounts and freebies.

1) LaMar's Donuts - Get a free doughnut at LaMar's, no purchase necessary.

National Running Day in Denver

Today is National Running Day, so why not celebrate by running over to Fun City for a day of bowling, miniature golf, laser tag, go-karts and arcade games?

June 5, 2013, marks the fifth annual National Running Day celebration. The "holiday" first started in 2009 when several running organizations joined together to celebrate an exercise both inexpensive and easy to engage in. Some of the organizations that helped jumpstart the holiday include Running USA, the Little Rock Marathon, New York Road Runners, USA Track and Field and the Boston Athletic Association.

In honor of the holiday, the official National Running Day Facebook page sponsors several contests for its fans, with giveaways including National Running Day hats.

For those of you who live in the Denver area, there are several ways to celebrate. There are two different free running events, both called Fun Runs, at 6pm this evening. One is at the Boulder Running Company, located on Pearl Street, and the other is at the Runner's Roost on Colorado Boulevard.

After your run, there are ways to help your body recover. Research has shown that eating tart cherries or drinking dark cherry juice helps people who are training for long-distance running. The reason is because the cherries are believed to have anti-inflammatory content, more than any other food!
