National Doughnut Day in Denver

Fun City is all about having a good time, and who doesn't have a good time when they are munching on doughnuts?

Unlike many food holidays, National Doughnut Day has an origin and history that can be traced. Celebrated on the first Friday of June each year, National Doughnut Day takes place in 2013 on Friday, June 7.

The holiday originated in Chicago in 1938, spearheaded by The Salvation Army to help raise money for those struggling during The Great Depression. The holiday also celebrated the "doughnut lassies," women who distributed doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. This was why soldiers arriving home were nicknamed "doughboys!"

Today, National Doughnut Day is a time to celebrate the sugary treat and take advantage of discounts, freebies, and deals offered by doughnut shops across the country. If you live in the Denver area, there are several places offering discounts and freebies.

1) LaMar's Donuts - Get a free doughnut at LaMar's, no purchase necessary.
2) Krispy Kreme - Krispy Kreme is offering a free doughnut to customers, no purchase necessary, at the 7514 East Parkway Drive location in Lone Tree and the 1051 East 120th Avenue location in Thornton.
3) Donut Hut Cafe - The Donut Hut Cafe in Littleton is celebrating the holiday beginning at 5:30am on June 7. They will have games, doughnut trivia, and free giveaways!
